Running along the Shonan beachfront just south of Tokyo, with only two major turns and 15m elevation difference the Shonan International Marathon is one of the flattest and straightest courses in Asia. Breath in the Pacific salt breeze and experience an incredible view of Mt. Fuji, the symbol of Japan.
Where is Shonan?
Shonan is the beautiful coastline area an hour south of Tokyo by train. The marathon starts and finishes in the historic aristocratic resort town of Oiso and runs along world-class beaches with spectacular views of Mt. Fuji. Some of Japan’s most popular sightseeing spots like Kamakura and the hot spring town of Hakone are just minutes away.
Our official tours give you entry, transportation and accommodations all in one easy package.
The Shonan International Marathon is the world’s first major marathon to achieve zero waste from paper cups and plastic bottles at drink stations along the course. At our 2023 race we reduced the event’s waste by 8446 kg, an initiative that got almost unanimous support from runners who loved both the experience of running on a clean course with no trash and knowing that they were helping to reduce the event’s environmental footprint.
Our goal is to make the marathon a more environmentally-friendly sport. Runners are asked to carry their own bottles or cups and to refill them at any of the 200 aid stations along the course, an innovative approach that eliminates the massive waste that is the norm at other races.
Our water stations don’t have paper cups or plastic bottles. Be sure to have your own bottle with at least 200ml of water when you start, and bring a cup too so you can take some of the other drinks we supply.
200 Water Stations on the Course
There are 200 water stations along the course, one every 200m. You’ll never been in need!
Having so many water stations means they’re never crowded, and you can refuel whenever you want.
We asked overseas runners who participated last year!
Dominated by a stellar view of Mt. Fuji, the Shonan beach resort area is home to world-famous sightseeing spots like the ancient town of Kamakura full of temples and shrines, the Enoden train crossing in the manga Slam Dunk, and Odawara Castle. The hot spring town of Hakone and downtown Yokohama are less than an hour away by train.
